WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN WORLD RIVERS?
Individuals, couples, families and groups are welcome.
HOW ARE PARTICIPANTS FOUND?
World Rivers grows through word of mouth and the internet.
DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST?
No. All are welcome.
CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE PERSON FROM A COUNTRY?
Yes.
HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT?
It is ongoing and increasing in number.
HOW IS WORLD RIVERS A GLOBAL COLLABORATION?
Participants around the world perform the same act together, different ways and times, contributing to a whole. Personal perspectives and views begin to reveal the layers and subtleties around the theme of water.
WHAT DO PARTICIPANTS NEED?
Fabric, an opinion, a river, photos and postage.
HOW DOES ONE START?
Send an email that expresses what moves you to participate, a personal quote or statement; views of water, the history of the river, something you read, concerns about water, praise about water, a childhood memory, a book, a link, a news story, poetry, or anything felt to be of significance, are all welcome.
WHAT TYPE OF FABRIC?
White fabric, either purchased or existing (like a tablecloth or napkin).
HOW MUCH WHITE FABRIC MUST BE USED?
Small amounts to large amounts, from a small swatch to 10 meters (32ft), are welcome.
ARE THERE CERTAIN RIVERS TO USE?
Any river, one close by, one that is visited on a trip or one of personal interest.
CAN RIVERS BE USED MORE THAN ONCE?
Yes. Different locations on the same river are welcome.
CAN A LAKE BE USED?
Yes. Lakes are usually the mouth of a river or two. (Example, it is said that Lake Manasarovar in Tibet holds water that overflows into the Holy Ganges). If a lake is used please let us know the river it feeds.
WHAT DOES DIPPING MEAN?
Dipping can be washing, floating, baptizing, moistening, and immersing. The fabric must touch the water.
HOW IS THE FABRIC DIPPED?
Participants decide how to dip their fabric in the river. Simple or complex, a quiet ritual, group or public performance.
HOW LONG SHOULD FABRIC BE IN THE RIVER?
A few minutes to a few hours is fine. The fabric must touch the water.
WILL THE FABRIC STAY WHITE?
In some rivers the fabric can change color due to mineral content or impurities.
HOW DO YOU DRY THE FABRIC?
Care must be taken to assure that the fabric is dry. The heat of the sun or the air of wind will help.
HOW IS THE DRY FABRIC SENT?
Place dry fabric into a cardboard box or envelope. Mail the fabric.
IS THERE A PROJECT DEADLINE?
The project is long-term and will span several years.
WHAT KIND OF PHOTOS SHOULD BE TAKEN?
Photos can be of the river and region, and of the finding, dipping and drying the fabric.
HOW MANY PHOTOS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED?
As many as you like, though there is a limit to what can be posted on the website.
HOW ARE THESE SENT?
Please use email or send with the fabric.
HOW WILL THE PHOTOS BE USED?
The photo rights belong to the person taking the picture. By submitting photos you agree to have them them posted with credits on the website, and used perhaps in a book format.
WILL THERE BE AN EXHIBIT?
An exhibition will be explored in the future.
WHERE WILL THE CURTAIN END UP?
The curtain will eventually be included in The Element Fane.
WHAT IS THE ELEMENT FANE?
The Element Fane is room filled with relics, items created by nature having to do with the essential elements, as a time capsule of our time.
